2020 was not a great year for news. Pandemic, fires, and all sorts of gloom have dominated our screens. But it wasn’t all bad, because our canine companions never let us down. Here are 10 of the best dog news stories from 2020.

The American Humane Hero Dog Award is an annual competition that celebrates America’s doggy heroes. Whether it’s working in service, saving lives, or simply providing lifelong companionship. And 2020’s winner was the heartwarming story of rescue turned reducer, MacKenzie.
Kenz for short, this little lady was born with a cleft palate, needed multiple surgeries and required constant bottle feeding. Now full-grown, she provides care for baby animals with birth defects, who often can’t be with their parents. She will cuddle and console them on their healing journey. Kenz also serves as a disability educator, interacting with children at schools so they learn to be open-minded, kind & patient.

Owner Rashida Ellis took a picture of her English Bulldog Pop while she was working from home during the pandemic. Big Poppa, his full name, was whining on her apartment patio. So Ellis sent the picture to her friends.
The photo was then retweeted thousands of times, as the perfect encapsulation of everyone’s mood. Apparently, Pop loves nothing more than playing with children and wasn’t able to go down and play with some of his usual friends due to social distancing guidelines. We feel you Pop.

Jake the pitbull was a victim of a house fire when he was still very small. But luckily he was rescued by the heroes of the South Carolina Fire Department.
One firefighter, Bill, took Jake into his own home. He was in rough shape and needed lots of help, but the two formed an incredible bond. Once he was recovered and fully grown, Jake became an official firefighter with help from the Mayor of Hanahan. No, we’re not crying! We just have something in our eye!
